The Godfather

I have watched this movie when i was a kid i don't quite remember my age then, this movie was aired on DD, that is on national television. My sister used to turn on the television set late night and i just watched what my sister watched, i never understood the plot then, or honestly speaking i never even understood what language they were speaking, english was alien to me(It still is ..) . At that time the movie was presented in a series manner rather than a whole movie perhaps length of each episode was of half an hour.

Eventually i got to know the essence of the movie when i watched it in my college days.

The Godfather is a 1972 crime drama film based on the 1969 novel of the same name by Mario Puzo and directed by Francis Ford Coppola, with a screenplay by Puzo, Coppola, and an uncredited Robert Towne. It stars Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Richard S. Castellano, Robert Duvall, Sterling Hayden, John Marley, Richard Conte and Diane Keaton, and features John Cazale and Abe Vigoda. The story spans ten years from 1945 to 1955 and chronicles the Italian-American Corleone crime family.

With every scene being so intense, from begining to end, as a viewer you somehow seem to get involved in the story. The shear presence of Marlon Brando as the central character creates an utter demenour that nobody could have attempted in the histroy of american cinema.

The movie starts with amerigo bonasera sitting in a room and asking for justice for her daughter is a flawless scene. Every scene is flawless , it was highly unlikely for this movie not to recieve any academy awards as it recieved academy award for best actor, best adapted screenplay and best picture. In addtion to that , it is ranked as the second greatest film in American cinematic history behind citizen kane.

The movie starts with the wedding party of godfather's daughter, where lot of his freinds came for help, as tom hagen said that ""no Sicilian can refuse a request on his daughter's wedding day".

But actully the movie starts to pick up it's pace when family meets with the Virgil "The Turk" Sollozzo (Al Lettieri) , who is being backed by the rival Tattaglia family. He asks Don Corleone for financing, political and legal protection for the importation and distribution of heroin, but despite the huge amount of money to be made, Corleone refuses, explaining that his political influence would be jeopardized by a move into the narcotics trade.

Then Sollozzo attacks godfather and then tries to negotiate with Sonny Corleone through Tom Hagen. From there on the character of Michael Corleone seems to take it's shape which is played by none other than "Al Pacino". If you oberve in the movie the character of Michael Corleone at first seems to be very quiet, shy and submissive, a son who actually does not want's his hands to get dirty in family buisness, a son who wants to make his mark on his own, a son who never spoke to his father about his future and a son who would be the next successor of godfather. That was really a surprise but only AL Pacino could have pulled it off. In the end of the movie where Michael Corleone was made godfather to her sister's child, at the same time head of the five families were executed, it's one of the best scenes in the movie.

My thought's about this movie is that it's all time classic movie a must watch movie, no matter how many times you watch, you will never find the place boredom from this movie. Although there are differences from the original novel, but if you ask me i liked the movie than the novel.

In the end i would like to say in the genre of godfather "It's a movie you could not refuse".

  1. Godfather is bible for me too man.
Marlon Brando with his composure and style was incomparable. Scenes revolving around 'The Godfather' make you say - What a man!!

This movie has set plot and stage for umpteen movies worldwide (Dayavaan, Sarkar, and scores of movies in 80s and 90s picked various facets from it).

'The Godfather' was the first novel, i ever read and i almost fell in love with the characters, but later on after reading more of literature i got to know that the novel can't be considered amongst the best.
But the movie is true art. Cinema at its best. A must watch. Truly

Two quotes by Godfather (written by Mario Puzo):

A lawyer with a suitcase is stronger than a thousand soldiers with their guns.

Revenge is a dish that tastes best when it is cold.
